About The Bowie Project

Recently I had the good fortune of attending one of the best exhibits I've ever seen at the Art Gallery of Ontario: David Bowie isGood fortune is actually an understatement - the Bowie exhibit blew my mind. And that's not because I was already a Bowie fan when I went in.

To be honest, I didn't know much about David Bowie until the day I went to the AGO. I was born in 1975 and was mainly raised on a musical diet consisting of The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, among other delicious delicacies of the rock and roll variety, courtesy of my parents and my Uncle Stu.

Uncle Stu, who often babysat my sister and me, was in a band throughout my childhood years, and he exposed us to a lot of the best most classic bands. And though I'm certain that Uncle Stu is indeed a Bowie fan and likely played the albums in my presence, somehow any kind of an impression of David Bowie as an artist managed to elude me.

Fast forward to November 3, 2013 and my trip to the AGO to see the Bowie exhibit. I went because I love the AGO and I'd heard great things about the show. Also, as I didn't know much about Bowie, I wanted to satisfy my curiosity about the man and his music.

I think I mentioned above that my mind got blown.

I was the last one out of the gallery as they closed and locked their doors for the night. I couldn't get enough. It occurred to me as I stumbled back out into the cool, crisp, evening that I had gone my whole life without knowing Bowie, without his music shuffling into my ears via my cassette deck in the 80s... via my discman in the 90s... via my iPod in the 2000s... and via my iPhone in the era I shall refer to as The Now. I've gone my whole life tragically unfamiliar with Bowie's various personae, his theatrics, his style... his Art.

Thus, The Bowie Project was conceived. Taking on the persona of "Myself in Another Time and Place in Space", I intend to listen to Bowie's albums, immerse myself in the culture of his existence, and express my thoughts and impressions here in this blog, giving myself the chance to experience Bowie the way I wish I could have done.

And every now and then, Myself in The Now may come forward to shed context on a particular thought or experience. I hope you enjoy this journey as much as I expect to! Thanks for reading.

    1. So what you're saying is that I have 11 months to make a Pepsi commercial with Tina Turner? On it.
